But I just watch episode one of the new top gear; it wasn’t bad, but it wasn’t amazingly good. Here are my thoughts since no one asked.
In my opinion, there are two things that are hindering the show. The first is that the chemistry between the hosts seem forced. And they need a third host, badly. The Clarkson, Hammond, and May dynamic was amazing because of the chemistry between the three. There is potential for Evans and LeBlanc to have similar chemistry, but they really need a third person in the mix. I’m also wondering, where is Sabine? I think Top Gear needs a German woman as another host.
The second issue is how they narrate. LeBlanc seemed a bit dull in his narrative, while Evans is talking like a radio host (while I’m not too crazy for). It could also be that I’m so used to the previous style of narrative that anything new seems weird. So take that with a grain of salt.
Overall, I’m eager to see this new direction of Top Gear. I really like the rallycross idea a lot, and I need to see a map of the stage. What I don’t like is the 1.5 hour time slot. Admittedly my attention span is just for an hour episode; anything longer pushes my patience.
The UK/USA dynamic is an interesting one, and I think it can be expanded on. Again, add Sabine, so it can be a UK, USA, German battle. That would be entertaining to watch.
Also, I could be watching the 2nd episode right now, but I’m in bed by 10pm; so it’s a bummer I’m missing it. Again, 1.5 hour show is too long for me.
And yes, I think the show has potential. But they are still figuring stuff out. So it’s a bit bad-ish right now. But I definitely think it’ll get better.
Ztp out.

I agree with your points. It’s not bad per say, but when you compare it to former new Top Gear then it doesn’t stand a chance.
A few things that bother me are just things that Chris Evans does. He was running around the set like maniac and his voice was too excited. The trio would narrate in a very soothing and slow manner. Almost like a professor who was explaining the essence of life to a class of students. The magic of the old Top Gear was they made it seem like a bunch of guys who just want to talk about cars without making it into a spectacle. They talked about cars and cracked jokes at each other’s expense and if you didn’t like that then they didn’t give a crap.
The other thing is Evans and LeBlanc were too nice to each other. There was way too much friendship building going on. The whole Evans helping LeBlanc to get to Blackpool and the whole high fiving business would not have happened with the trio. They’d have laughed their asses off and kept going without the one who’d broken down.

Yeah, but if any show lost its hosts and got new ones, they would have to change the show in some way. There’s no way anyone could compare with the previous hosts, ever. TG is now become more of Evans and LeBlancs show with these changes; it’s more personalized.
And I agree with them being nice friends is weird. But they again, it might be weird for a uk host and a usa host to constantly make fun of each other. Then again, I'm looking forward to LeBlanc being awkward in the uk!
